When employees work as a team, everyone benefits. Whether your company serves customers or clients directly or indirectly, an employee team simply functions more effectively and positively with team spirit and team players. Sometimes, employees need coaching and assistance to build this spirit, and that’s where team-building activities can help. Engage your employees in office games and activities that will build a positive team spirit.

Team-building activities work by encouraging coworkers to work together to solve engaging challenges. Through the activities, people can get to know each other better and learn about various strengths and weaknesses people bring to the workplace team. When management personnel observe the team-building games and activities, they can also note individual strengths and weaknesses in employees as well as potential issues to monitor during work situations. Employees may enjoy the opportunity to get away from workplace anxiety and deadlines, instead focusing on engaging and informal team-building activities.

Avoid common pitfalls of team-building activities by choosing activities that fit your staff. Don’t force employees to engage in anything corny or childish, and don’t expect your staff to participate in games that force physical exertion if this doesn’t fit with the work crew. For the best effect, choose activities that focus on problem areas or skills your team needs to build. It’s also helpful to schedule ongoing team-building activities two or three times a year instead of trying to resolve issues with one event.

An example of a team-building activity could be a group activity that requires employees to work as a team to solve a problem or meet a goal. Moving marbles across an obstacle course without using the hands is one example of an activity. You could also present a situation to two or more teams of employees and encourage them to come up with the best possible solution to the problem. In both of these examples, employees are presented with a problem to solve and they must work together as a team to find a solution. Remember to keep the goals light and engaging: These team-building activities shouldn’t involve negative or heavy situations.

Sometimes, your team needs help improving the way they communicate with each other. Use communication activities and games to build communication skills between coworkers. Try breaking a group up into groups of eight and blindfolding everyone. Give them the task of forming themselves into a specific shape, such as a square or a triangle, by just talking to each other and being unable to see. Divide your employees up into small teams and give them the task of creating a mission statement together. Have each individual team member first create their own mission statement, such as, “A team that works effectively together will…” After creating individual statements, have them share them with their group and then work together to create one statement that the entire group supports. This activity encourages working together and cooperation.

If your employees need to improve trust and cohesion between the individual workers, use activities that will help build and hone these skills. Separate employees into pairs and have one person wear a blindfold. The second person should verbally guide the blindfolded person through a maze to get the person safely to the end without injury. This game forces employees to trust each other. Employees also need to focus on listening carefully and following instructions completely. Build even simple skills such as eye contact by dividing your employees into pairs. Encourage them to stand facing each other and maintain eye contact with each other for one minute. After finishing, discuss the importance of looking at people when speaking. A variation of this is to have the pairs of employees hold hands while maintaining eye contact. This variation stresses the importance of physical touch while communicating.
